Quick take
- The core question is value before versus value after.
- Both sides of that comparison need supporting evidence.
- Generic percentage formulas ignore trim, market and repair specifics.
- Severity, structural involvement and history-report wording all matter.
- There is no universal recovery amount.
The before-and-after framework
Establish what the vehicle would sell for in its pre-accident condition, using comparable vehicles of the same year, trim, mileage and equipment in your market. Then establish what the same vehicle is worth with a reported accident in its history and its actual repair record. The gap is the loss being claimed.
What goes into each side of the comparison
- Comparable listings and sales for the same configuration
- Mileage, options and documented condition
- The damage severity and which areas of the vehicle were repaired
- The final repair invoice, including parts used and methods
- How the accident appears on vehicle history reports
- Market demand for that specific vehicle in your area
Why generic formulas may not reflect your vehicle
Formulas circulated online typically apply a fixed percentage and a set of caps that were never designed around your vehicle's trim, market or repair. Two vehicles with identical repair costs can lose very different amounts of value depending on desirability, age, mileage and how the damage is reported. A documented, vehicle-specific analysis is far more persuasive than a formula printout.
What this means for vehicle owners
Whoever documents the market best has the stronger position. Assemble the repair record and the comparables early, while the evidence is easy to obtain, and keep the analysis specific to your vehicle.
There is no universal amount and no universal method. Acceptance of any particular methodology can depend on the state, the insurer and the type of claim.
Common mistakes
- Submitting a formula result with no supporting market evidence
- Comparing against a different trim or a distant market
- Ignoring the repair invoice, which often explains the severity
- Assuming a higher repair cost automatically means a higher diminished value
